If you are interested in downloading existing data, many user-friendly, web-based databases, such as Global Access, may be accessed through Baker Library's homepage. Additional databases are added regularly, and faculty may purchase data as needed for their research. If you are interested in purchasing existing data, please email data-licensing@hbs.edu in Baker Research & Data Services.
How We Work
RCS primarily provides support for HBS faculty research, and we are happy to provide guidance for RAs, doctoral students, faculty support specialists, and other collaborators supporting HBS faculty research. Initial consultations and short inquiries for faculty and individuals supporting or collaborating with them are provided at no cost for up to one hour per month. Consultations longer than one hour and project work for faculty are charged to faculty research budgets at a rate of $40/hour. See our collection of featured projects for examples of RCS-supported research.
While we typically do not take on non-faculty project work, we do provide limited consultations for doctoral students and others on their non-faculty research. Non-faculty projects will be carried out by special arrangement only.
To engage with RCS, please refer to details on our Contact Us page. The Research Inbox (research@hbs.edu) is the most prevalent method of contacting RCS and clients typically receive a response within a business day. When reaching out, we recommend sending as many details as possible, including sample data, code, and reference papers. This facilitates our matching process, which links requests to team members based on expertise and availability. When possible, more than one team member may be assigned to your project to ensure coverage and leverage complementary skillsets. All projects are reviewed weekly during a team meeting to assess their status and facilitate proper execution.
Guidelines and Expectations
- RCS’ primary commitment is to supporting and advancing faculty research. As such, we cannot assist with student assignments, paid consultancies, outside employment, externships, or commercial projects.
- Although RCS will ensure that work is completed to a high standard, all code and results are the responsibility of the researcher. In addition to conducting a final review of the code and/or results, the researcher will be responsible for long term storage and managing any requests for access to the code or data.
- When a project necessitates the creation of an account on a non-HBS platform (e.g., Twitter), the researcher may be asked to "own" the account and provide access to the RCS team member to ensure that the researcher maintains access to the account and results.
