We would like to inform you about new requirements for project space requests on the HBSGrid that are being implemented to ensure consistency with University policies and regulatory requirements, and to support data security measures.
New Requirements for Project Space Requests
Effective February 11, all necessary compliance documentation, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) documentation, Data Use Agreements (DUA) and Data Safety (DAT) documentation, must be complete and approved before submitting a project space request. If you are requesting a project space to work with data that does not require compliance documentation (see Research Data Security Policy), you can indicate that on the request form. Otherwise:
- • Requestors will need to provide reference numbers for all compliance documentation as part of their project space request (e.g., IRB25-0000, DUA25-0000, DAT25-0000).
- • All individuals added to new or existing project spaces must be named in the relevant DAT documentation, and as required, IRB protocol.
Project Space Sponsor Responsibility and Attestation
To ensure adherence to School requirements, only HBS faculty members, as well as some doctoral students and post-doctoral trainees, will be authorized to request project spaces. This measure is being taken to ensure that those responsible for the oversight of research projects are directly accountable for compliance obligations.
We understand that these changes may require some adjustment, but they are essential for maintaining the security and integrity of the data and research conducted within our system. We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to adhering to these new requirements. Should you have any questions or require further clarification regarding these changes, please do not hesitate to contact RCS at research@hbs.edu.

New Capability Coming to the HBSGrid
- 08 JUL 2024
Starting on August 5, users will receive a notice when they are running compute-intensive jobs on the login nodes. We ask that you respond to these notices to ensure that the login nodes remain stable and are always responsive and accessible for users to submit and monitor their jobs.
We are pleased to announce that we are deploying a new capability on the HBSGrid cluster that will improve the performance and the availability of the system. Starting on August 5, users will receive a notice when they are running compute-intensive jobs on the login nodes. We ask that you respond to these notices to ensure that the login nodes remain stable and are always responsive and accessible for users to submit and monitor their jobs.
Compute-intensive jobs are those that consume a large amount of CPU and/or memory. These jobs should be submitted to the compute nodes using the LSF job scheduler, which will allocate the appropriate resources and run them efficiently. Anyone launching interactive (GUI) sessions using the Grid 3.0 launchers are already using the scheduler to launch work on compute nodes. Users submitting jobs via the command line should use bsub commands.
We understand that some users may have work that relies on running compute intensive jobs on the login nodes, such as for development and testing, or quick analysis. To accommodate these use cases, please consider using the short queue. To use this queue, please refer to our documentation.
We hope that this new capability will enhance your user experience and help you achieve your research goals. If you have any questions or feedback, please contact us at research@hbs.edu.
Thank you for your cooperation and support!
