Predoctoral Experience

The Predoctoral Research Associate role is designed to provide research associates (RAs) with exposure to a variety of research areas, while gaining experience with different research methodologies. This work, when coupled with mentorship from Harvard Business School (HBS) faculty, positions RAs to narrow and focus their research interests before applying to a doctoral program.

RAs have an opportunity to see first-hand how ideas, projects, research studies, and data move from ideation to execution. In addition to faculty mentorship, Predoctoral RAs are expected to participate in all professional development-focused programming offered by Research Staff Services, often in partnership with the HBS Doctoral Office.

Events and seminars are designed to provide Predoctoral RAs with opportunities to build community, develop new skills, reflect on their professional and academic strengths and opportunities for growth, and to prepare for the doctoral application process.

Why choose to be a Predoctoral Research Associate at HBS?

Applied Research Experience

Predoctoral RAs engage in cutting-edge research projects, contributing to groundbreaking insights across business disciplines such as finance, marketing, organizational behavior, and entrepreneurship. You will gain hands-on experience analyzing data, designing experiments, and synthesizing findings, and have concrete examples you can use in your doctoral application.

Mentorship from Leading Faculty

As an RA, you'll work directly with faculty who are leaders in their fields. This mentorship fosters academic growth, enhances technical skills, and provides valuable guidance for your future research pursuits. They are a great source of inspiration and information about what it takes to succeed as a doctoral student.

Skill Development & Academic Preparation

The program equips RAs with advanced quantitative and qualitative research skills, helping them build a strong foundation for PhD programs. Peer seminars, workshops, and collaborative discussions enrich the work experience. While it is first and foremost a job, it's a job that helps you become a competitive doctoral applicant.

Community & Networking

Working as a Predoctoral RA means becoming part of an intellectually stimulating community. You'll connect with peers, faculty, students, and other academic professionals who are passionate about solving complex problems and advancing knowledge. Demonstrating that you can navigate a complex academic environment is a key part of the doctoral admissions process, and working as an RA at HBS will give you that experience.
