Statement of Dr. James Si-Cheng Chao
At the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the
Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Center
Harvard Business School

Thursday, April 24, 2014

We are deeply humbled to be here today to break ground for the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Center at Harvard Business School.

This has been a seven-year journey to honor the life and legacy of my beloved wife, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, who placed a high value on education and devoted her entire life to serving others. Throughout our years together, Ruth was my inspiration and a full partner in everything our family achieved. She imbued each of our six daughters—four of whom attended Harvard Business School-- with a love of learning that created a strong foundation for them to grow and achieve their dreams. When difficult decisions had to be made, she was an unfailing source of love, courage and strength. Without her, we could not have achieved anything.

During our lifetimes, Ruth and I witnessed a world transformed in fundamental ways. It is now more interconnected than any time in history. So it is more important than ever to foster leaders who have a greater understanding of, and familiarity with, the global environment. With this center, and the scholarship fund established in her honor, we hope to continue Ruth’s legacy by inspiring leaders on a global scale to aspire to high standards of ethical leadership, and to make the world a better place.
