Statement of Angela Chao
Statement of Angela Chao It is a great joy to be here today to participate in the ground breaking ceremony for a new executive education and MBA center named in honor of our mother, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao. When completed, the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Center will serve as a gateway to share the resources of this great school with a new generation of global leaders. My mother valued education highly, and instilled in us a love of learning at an early age. After devoting many years to nurturing a family, she went back to school herself to fulfill a lifelong dream of obtaining an advanced degree. She treasured education not only for the sake of acquiring knowledge itself, but for its role in strengthening critical thinking, expanding personal horizons and building mutual understanding among people of different backgrounds. She believed strongly in the transformative power of education, and its ability to foster leaders of courage and conviction. This center is a fitting testament to her spirit and to her values, which continue to inspire my father, my sisters and myself to give back to others. We are grateful to the Harvard community, to the many leaders assembled here today, and to all who join us in celebrating this milestone honoring our mother’s heroic life and her philanthropic spirit. We hope that each person who comes through this center will be inspired by Ruth Mulan Chu Chao’s story to make a positive difference for others, as she did for so many.
