Nathan Ie: Healogram

Tell us about your business.

Healogram does telemonitoring and analytics for wound care. I'm referring to both the ambulatory kind of wound care you see in reconstructive plastic surgery and burns, as well as the subacute, chronic kind that's common in skilled nursing and home health settings (think pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, etc). We help providers in wound care better measure, monitor, and manage their wound patient populations.

Tell us about yourself.

My most current and rewarding accomplishment is building this startup; namely, taking an idea (whose seeds were in my heart long before HBS) and turning it into an actual product and entity that healthcare organizations are paying for and using to help providers better care for their patients.

My mom, in addition to being an inspiration in my life in general (she's one tough cookie), plays a large role in why I'm working in the health tech space in the first place. Without getting into the details, caring for her growing up left me with two observations: first, our broken healthcare system can be cruel to the people who need the most compassion, and second, technology can and will play a big part in fixing a lot of that.

Outside of health tech, I’m passionate about physical fitness. The entrepreneurial life is a demanding one, and being in the gym provides an energy boost I need.

What did you learn from HBS?

That so much of life is just trial-and-error, a series of educated guesses. The engineer in me was often caught up in finding the "right answer." Being stuffed in a classroom at HBS and left to debate with 90 very different, bright, young minds distilled this perspective for me: no one has the perfect perspective, and I certainly shouldn't expect myself to. Everyone simply brings a different piece of the jigsaw puzzle. The fact that I don't have all the answers pushes me to lean on my support network to get a clear picture. And that's actually been a wonderful thing.

Where is your business headed in the future?

We aim to be the go-to health technology when remote monitoring and collaboration are needed. There's going to be a 90,000-physician shortage by 2020 here in the U.S. If you're anything like me, you believe that telehealth will play a role in bridging this gap. At the moment, there are so many workflows that currently happen in the clinic that don't necessarily have to. We'll continue to build a library of solutions that allow clinical workflows to happen from anywhere.

What do you, personally, hope to accomplish in the future?

I hope to build successful businesses that have a positive, lasting impact on the world and to build a strong, joyful family. In short, to love and be loved. Oh, and that may include a Jack Russell terrier, too.

I can say one phrase in 13 languages. Super useful, I know.
