Nitin Nohria & Mitt Romney Fireside Chat

As part of the Harvard Dialogues series, US Senator Mitt Romney joined former Harvard Business School (HBS) Dean Nitin Nohria to discuss “Leading When It’s Difficult." They talked about how to balance global policy and personal values amid challenging times. The event was held in HBS’s Klarman Hall.

Honoring the History of Black Americans in the Military

This Black History Month, Senior Lecturer Hise Gibson walked us through his experience in the United States Army. He spoke about the Black leaders in the armed services who have inspired him, and the seen (and unseen) impact of Black Americans in the military throughout history.

Free Speech and Community Values Working Group Q+A

We spoke with the co-chairs of the Expression and Community Values Working Group, one of the four working groups established by Dean Srikant Datar to address current issues on campus. Debora Spar and Clayton Rose discuss the goals, challenges, and progress towards clarifying the relationship between free speech, academic freedom, and community values.

We also had conversations with co-chairs of the Antisemitism, Islamophobia and Anti-Arabism, and Classroom Culture and Norms working groups.

SpringFest

This year’s SpringFest was a celebration of Earth Day and the total solar eclipse. Over 1,000 community members gathered at the Schwartz Pavilion for a solar eclipse viewing, celestial-themed snacks, Earth Day-themed tables, and a special visit from Sasha, Harvard University Police Department’s community engagement dog.

Commencement

Our 114th commencement honored the Class of 2024 and celebrated their achievements and resilience. 1,004 students received their MBA degrees, five percent with high distinction as Baker Scholars, and 19 students in the Doctoral Program earned PhDs.

Cold Call: Climate Change and the Disruption of the Insurance Industry

As climate change drives an increase in high-intensity weather events, the challenges facing the insurance industry continue to be pressing. Insurtech firm Hippo considered how its underwriting model could adapt to these challenges. By offering smart home packages, targeting low-risk customers, and leveraging data-driven pricing, Hippo used technology-powered services to build a competitive edge. In his case “Hippo: Weathering the Storm of the Home Insurance Crisis,” Professor Lauren Cohen explores how insurtech firm Hippo is responding to these challenges.

HBS MBA Now STEM-Designated

“This change will enable all students, particularly our international students, to pursue the opportunities a STEM-eligible degree affords,” said Jana Pompadur Kierstead, executive director, MBA and Doctoral Programs and External Relations.

This July, we announced that our MBA Program has been reclassified to qualify as a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degree, effective for the class of 2025 and onward.

Managing the Future of Work: Introducing HBS's latest podcast, Think Big, Buy Small

Managing the Future of Work host Joe Fuller talks to faculty colleagues Rick Ruback and Royce Yudkoff about their new podcast, Think Big, Buy Small, which launched in June. The show is based on the popular HBS course Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition, and combines expert perspective and advice with personal stories from entrepreneurs and other key players.

Baker Library | Bloomberg Center’s latest exhibition, From Concept to Product: Meroë Morse and Polaroid’s Culture of Art and Innovation, 1945–1969, highlights Polaroid’s innovative culture and celebrates Meroë Morse's design contributions, showcasing how Polaroid blended art and technology to revolutionize instant photography.

Impact Beyond Theory

Our new social video series, Impact Beyond Theory, brings HBS professors to the forefront as they explore how their research connects to today’s business trends. From emerging technologies and entrepreneurship strategies to leadership dynamics, Impact Beyond Theory offers a dynamic platform for translating academic expertise into real-world impact. Professor Andy Wu launched the series by examining whether AI models can truly be creative on their own.

Climate Rising: Why COP Matters for Business

Ahead of the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, Mike Toffel, HBS professor and host of Climate Rising, sat down with Tom Rivett-Carnac, a former UN political strategist and key architect of the Paris Agreement; and Paul Dickinson, the founder of the global non-profit CDP; to discuss what managers should know about these United Nations meetings, how they can engage to influence climate policy, and what to expect at COP 29.
