How did the idea for your company come about?

The team was formed in May 2015 at a brainstorming session hosted by the iHub at Brigham and Women’s Hospital designed to help clinicians and researchers bring their ideas into reality.

What does your company do? How is it distinct in its product/service category?

BrainSpec is a software platform that enables efficient, accurate, and non-invasive diagnosis of brain disorders using Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. For doctors who diagnose and treat brain diseases, BrainSpec can aid in diagnosing a wide range of neurological disorders including brain tumor progression, Alzheimer's disease, temporal lobe epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury in a completely non-invasive manner to improve patient care.

Where do you hope to take it in the future?

Instead of getting pictures of the brain, that one typically does with an MRI machine, we measure the chemistry. The power of this technique is it allows us to really get a better understanding of what is going on pathophysiologically in the brain and other parts of the body. This technology is available on every MRI scanner and these chemicals that we can measure (the phrase we use is “Virtual Biopsy”) allow us to really get at what’s going within the tissue of the brain in a completely non-invasive manner.
