The Industry That Treats Its Customers Worse Than Any Other

I recently wrote a blog about how the oligopolistic nature of the airline and cable TV industries reduces competition serving the companies’ interests but not consumers’. Now Harvard Business School has published a report by Katherine Gehl and Michael Porter about the U.S. political system having a similar problem. Gehl and Porter say our political system, which they call the political industry, is a business like many others but with only two participants and no effective competitors to the two major parties. They say the structure is doesn’t serve its citizen-customers. Most important, the only customers being well served are the two major political parties themselves.
