"As a student dedicated to public service, I hope to learn more about how technology and entrepreneurship can be harnessed to address complex societal problems and create positive social change. As a Tech Innovation Fellow, I am excited to take classes at HBS, participate in the Startup bootcamp, and learn from the other incredible peers in my cohort."
Tech areas of interest:
Tech for social good, civic technology, product management, human-centered design
Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business:
As a Project Manager for Harvard Tech for Social Good last spring, I led a team of engineers and designers that worked with an experienced civic technologist to create a web app comparing the effectiveness of child welfare policies in all 50 states. This web app used both data visualization and human-centered design to help foster care officials learn about promising practices in child welfare from other states. This experience at the intersection of technology and government showed me how technology can help solve real-world problems - and piqued my curiosity in both for-profit and non-profit organizations in the social impact tech space.
Professional goals:
I know that I want to dedicate my life to empowering the most marginalized populations in our society. Tech areas of interest:
Financial Services, Ed-Tech, Sustainability, Digital Health
Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business:
Having co-founded a healthcare startup that was funded by some of the most prominent people in Silicon Valley, I've realized the power of technology to solve problems at a very large scale. The ability to impact hundreds of lives, at an early age, in a field I knew relatively little about, was so empowering, and I hope to achieve that sort of impact with my next endeavor. Further, the types of people working at the intersection of tech and business are exactly the people I want to surround myself with from both a professional and personal perspective.
Professional goals:
I want to be working at a company (either my own or another person's!) that is at the forefront of solving one of the most pressing problems of our generation, with people who challenge my assumptions constantly and encourage constant learning.

“The productization of a technological innovation is dependent on so many factors such as the culture and governance of a society; this unfortunately causes some promising innovations to die in the process before it benefits society. I believe the best technologies aren't just those developed in high-tech labs, but those that are made accessible and beneficial to society. I am excited to join the Harvard Tech Fellow program to discuss with my peers to bring more promising ideas and technologies, especially healthcare technologies, to the most underprivileged and underrepresented communities. ”
Tech areas of interest:
Artificial intelligence in Healthcare and Education Healthcare equity, Education equity, Women in STEM from developing countries

I'm very excited to be a part of the Tech Fellows community, and look forward to learning from and with people who are equally dedicated to developing and applying tech solutions to change the world.”
Tech areas of interest:
Biotechnology, Data Science
Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business:
I have previously interned at an early-stage venture firm in China/Korea as well as a hedge fund in Boston, and have spent a good deal of time conducting biostatistics research at MGH on novel cancer therapeutics, and bioinformatics research with HMS & the Undiagnosed Disease Network. The sum of my experiences thus far have informed my understanding of interactions between business and academia/the origins of tech, and I have come to realize that impact and scale is best achieved when both worlds are seamlessly integrated.
Professional goals:
Data science has such a powerful role to play in making the delivery of healthcare more equitable and efficient. I want to join or start a team that empowers people whose needs are underserved by current systems of care, whether that's patients with orphan diseases, those diagnosed with costly chronic conditions, or individuals in rural communities. Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business:
From serving in a combat technology unit to working at a healthcare VC and then in software at Microsoft, I've experienced technology being integrated into a wide array of disciplines. What I've found is that it is often too easy to fall in love with the technology itself and not with the value added to the end-user. Technology and business meet where technology is fully leveraged in order to provide real value to the users - that's where technology matters.
Professional goals:
My long-term goal is to build and scale technology products that enable people to live healthier lives in a sustainable world. I think the way to get there is by learning from and collaborating with people who can challenge each other to think deeper and work harder.

Tech areas of interest:
Aerospace, Robotics
Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business:
Throughout high school, I led our Poolesville Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam, where we developed a patent pending device to help visually impaired individuals identify, sort, and handle US paper currency. Supported now through Microsoft’s patent program #MakeWhat’sNext, our team started out receiving an initial grant of $8,000.00 from the Lemelson-MIT initiative. While conducting research for a history professor, I learned of Minamata disease, a mysterious neurological disorder in 1950s Japan that caused thousands of victims to suffer ataxia, paralysis, and death. A team of scientists at a local university quickly discovered that the disease was caused by a chemical company dumping untreated mercury into the water, but industry-funded researchers from one of Japan's most prestigious universities sowed doubts, and the victims did not prevail in court until 1973. The fast-growing chemical company's faith in its cutting-edge technology diverted it from its human consequences, and people in powerful positions were happy to help the company cover up, for the right price. This case study illustrates the power, peril, and promise of technology.

I spent the past two summers working as a data scientist on Facebook’s Product Foundation Data team. My time at Facebook showed me the immense power of data analysis in enacting societal change; I witnessed Facebook connect blood donor matches and optimizing humanitarian relief after natural disasters through data. However, my time at Facebook also showed me the tremendous potential for misuse in data analytics; I watched Facebook’s ad-targeting technology exclude minorities from seeing housing ads and Facebook’s malicious-content classifier erroneously remove videos of breastfeeding mothers. Data has tremendous potential to catalyze both good and bad; however, often industry leaders in data analytics are ill-equipped to grapple with nebulous ideas of privacy and determine data regulations. One of the hardest challenges I foresee for societies worldwide is the question of green energy generation and distribution. The other is human spaceflight and our continued exploration of the unknown.
Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business
The application of engineering principles to solve problems became a fascination through visits to the London Science Museum as a child. The towering B747 aircraft landing gear at the entrance and roaring steam engine in the main hall not only piqued my interest in learning how these fantastic machines worked, but also in how they were designed with operational and market constraints in mind. Because of this, I came to see engineering as a fundamentally a liberal arts subject: one needs to combine both the technical understanding of science and systems with an appreciation of the needs of society to engineer a solution that will be both useful and sustainable.
Professional goals
I intend on exploring an industry that aligns with my interests when I leave college in order to gain valuable insights and engineering skills. Following graduate school—be that an MBA or another program—equipped with a deeper understanding of a field, I would like to tackle a non-trivial challenge, such as sustainable energy for cities. That may entail starting an enterprise myself or joining a team of driven individuals.

"The creativity of humans is awesome. I'm excited to be a part of a group dedicated to innovating, collaborating, and building. I'm excited to explore the unknowns, listen to the invisibles, and create the impossibles.”
Tech areas of interest
I'm interested in the integration of technology into cities! There's so much innovative potential for technology to make cities more affordable, accessible, and livable.
Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business
I took a design class my Sophomore Spring, and loved it. I've since been really interested in thinking more critically about accessible design, and how design decisions shape our daily functions. Tossed into this mix is recognizing the integral role that business has in everything; we design and build stuff for people. Business helps bring good ideas into practice.
Professional goals
I know eventually I want to be involved in creating something that makes everyday life better for people (especially marginalized groups!). Perhaps this will take shape in working with cities, or perhaps research, or perhaps various start-ups!

"My dream is to build cool things and change the world. But even as I've worked to develop a solid foundation in science and technology, I've had little exposure to the business side of things, which is why I'm grateful and excited for this opportunity to experience the full story. I can't wait to begin the Tech Fellows program where I'll learn how to turn a dream into reality--and do so alongside a group of amazing peers and mentors!"
Tech areas of interest
I enjoy learning about emerging and developing technologies like quantum computing, computer vision, and natural language processing. I also like seeing well-designed products and devices that combine tech and art.
Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business
My inspiration is Steve Jobs. As a kid who loved building Legos and tinkering with electronics, but who also enjoyed drawing and painting, learning about this artist-turned inventor (who eventually grew into a businessman too) struck a chord with me and showed me a lifestyle in tech/business that I continue to strive towards today.
Professional goals
I want to make use of my artistic talents and technical skills together to build products that will enhance people's lives.

Formative experience at the intersection of technology and business
In 2017, I co-founded a tech startup, Loro, building a smart companion device for wheelchair users. I worked on product development and ran our financing process, communicating our story and business plan to investors. I recognized how critical a strong alignment of technology development and business plan is to the success of a venture.
