As a joint degree student, I benefit from immersive case studies at HBS where my classmates and I are challenged to analyze the business and ethical considerations of each managerial decision. On the other hand, at the Harvard Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology department, we interrogate scientific papers and consider the business case for the commercialization of cutting-edge science. Initially I was not thinking about going to business school. The plan was to pursue an MS in biomedical engineering, until a few colleagues sent me press articles about the new Harvard joint degree, through which you can pursue both the MBA and an MS in Biotechnology. It was such an intuitive fit, one where I could leverage my previous experiences and improve my fluency in both the languages of business and science, to ultimately drive innovation in a sustainable and impactful way. Since emigrating from Syria at the age of five, I have personally experienced the uphill battle of obtaining health care coverage as a non-US citizen. My family, along with many other immigrant and low-income families, are often forced to choose between receiving care and prescription medicines or paying a stream of medical bills. My aversion to health care growing up, juxtaposed by the cost-free, quality care I received later in life as a US citizen, is why I want to work towards improving the health care system. [...]
Harvard’s new MS/MBA Biotechnology: Life Sciences joint degree program confers an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master of Science from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Medical School in the Harvard Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology (SCRB), a Faculty of Arts and Sciences/Harvard Medical School joint department. The program is completed over two academic years, utilizing January terms and time in August at the start of the program.
