In 2021, after working in big tech for just over four years, I felt an itch to try something new. I was seeing friends around me leave their more established jobs to pursue exciting opportunities as early employees in startups. Many of them were motivated by the renowned investor Marc Andreessen’s recent essay, titled “It’s Time to Build.” In it, Andreessen discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaping institutional voids in society that technology had the potential to address – so long as there were people willing to build it. Ananya Zutshi (MS/MBA 2021) wanted a career in pharmacology biotech, but wasn’t sure if she wanted to be on the management side or scientific side. She studied biomedical engineering as an undergraduate at Duke University, where she participated in genetic and tissue engineering research. Zutshi originally planned to pursue a Ph.D., but instead spent four years at Catalent Pharma Solutions, a leading pharma/biotech contract manufacturing development organization. Surrounded by potential career paths in the industry, Zutshi wondered if she needed an advanced degree to stay in the field. [...]

Amid the greatest economic, geopolitical, and social uncertainty in years, there is one thing we can be sure about – real value creation and innovation are enduring. This is why we founded the Harvard Builders Club, an alumni community for Harvard’s builders who dare to innovate. The Harvard Builders Club’s mission is to empower leaders who build a better, more creative, and more diverse world. The club is a think tank for innovative ideas and a space for meaningful bonds between the builders community and prominent venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and tech leaders. [...]
Kate Sweeney has always been fascinated by how space technology can be used to improve people’s lives back on Earth. Sweeney, who is about to complete her M.S./M.B.A., offered jointly by the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Harvard Business School, will soon head to SpaceX, where she’ll work in the direct-to-cell connectivity department. Along with enabling normal cell phone features such as text messaging and phone calls, that technology uses the communication between cell phones and satellites for remote search-and-rescue, especially in rural settings with otherwise limited connectivity.
