“Humanity is on thin ice,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said during a video message in March 2023. “And that ice is melting fast."
Guterres was responding to the AR6 Synthesis Report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warned of “a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all.” To keep temperature rise to 1.5°C and avoid a cascade of climatological catastrophes—flood, drought, famine, disease, species extinction, and many, many others—the world must cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. Amid the greatest economic, geopolitical, and social uncertainty in years, there is one thing we can be sure about – real value creation and innovation are enduring. This is why we founded the Harvard Builders Club, an alumni community for Harvard’s builders who dare to innovate. The Harvard Builders Club’s mission is to empower leaders who build a better, more creative, and more diverse world. The club is a think tank for innovative ideas and a space for meaningful bonds between the builders community and prominent venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and tech leaders. [...]
Kate Sweeney has always been fascinated by how space technology can be used to improve people’s lives back on Earth. Sweeney, who is about to complete her M.S./M.B.A., offered jointly by the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Harvard Business School, will soon head to SpaceX, where she’ll work in the direct-to-cell connectivity department. Along with enabling normal cell phone features such as text messaging and phone calls, that technology uses the communication between cell phones and satellites for remote search-and-rescue, especially in rural settings with otherwise limited connectivity. It’s a place that promotes my growth, pushing me out of my comfort zone to help me become a better version of myself, but also nourishing my spirit with love and support when I’m feeling down. I think of my community as a place where I can share my interests and dreams with others without criticism. [...]
The MS/MBA program is a dual degree program. In two years, you'll earn an MBA from Harvard's Business School and a Master of Science in engineering from Harvard's Engineering School. The core of the curriculum is a set of five classes open only to students in this program, which go through the design fundamentals and the process of launching a new high-tech venture. And it covers the whole process from the initial need discovery process, through developing the idea, fleshing out the product and the business model, to actually pitching to venture capitalists and getting feedback. When you finish the program, you're in a great position to go out and immediately launch a new tech venture. [...]
