If there’s one thing our LEAD (Leadership and Organizational Behavior) Professor David Fubini (MBA 1980) tried to drill into the MBA Class of 2024 Section I, it’s that we should take the time to thank the people who got us to HBS – whether that be our parents, our partners, our mentors, or everyone else in between.
And so, it came as no surprise that our section came together on a spring Saturday to fulfill this very purpose. We had a total of 81 guests, including attendees both in person and via Zoom. These individuals journeyed from as far away as France and as nearby as Watertown and Wayland, Massachusetts. Zoom allowed us to connect with participants spanning the globe, hailing from countries such as China, Colombia, Germany, Nigeria, the Philippines, and across the United States. [...]
In early May, I embarked on a journey to Seoul, South Korea, accompanied by 70 fellow Harvard Business School classmates. Our purpose? To culminate our first-year studies through the FIELD Global Immersion program. Throughout this transformative experience, I collaborated closely with five diverse peers to support our project sponsor, DoctorNow, a Korean telehealth start-up. In the weeks leading up to our Seoul adventure, we diligently forged a solid working relationship, delved into comprehensive research of the company and the South Korean context, and honed our skills in design thinking principles. The challenge posed to students in HBS’s FIELD Global Immersion (FGI) course sounds a bit like a premise for reality TV: Travel to unfamiliar markets where you might not speak the language, work in teams with students you might not know, and develop critical solutions to a business’s pressing issues—in just eight days. That’s the concept behind FGI, a required course for first-year MBA students. Since 2011, it has become an important learning-in-the-field complement to the case method used in the classroom. This past May, more than 1,000 students in the Class of 2024, divided into faculty-led cohorts of some 70 students each, worked in 15 locations (see box) with 171 global business partners to get a firsthand look at how business is conducted around the world. My first semester teaching Entrepreneurship to first year MBAs at Harvard Business School has come to a close. “Just” 15 years ago, I sat in the exact same room as a member of the MBA class of 2010, and so this experience has been extra special, difficult, and inspiring.
