When I talk to people in different industries and organizations, people agree on the importance of mentorship. However, if you look at how people spend their time, there is huge variability in terms of how much people prioritize mentoring activities. Some people see mentoring others as an obligation (that is, just another activity that HR wants employees to do), whereas others see it as an opportunity. We find in our research that a key difference has to do with mentors’ approach to their own learning. [...]
When I was younger, I watched telenovelas with my mom. I looked beyond the drama and strove to have this luxurious life of executives in the shows. I set my mind on becoming one of these executives. While my undergraduate degree is in engineering, I wanted to explore business more through formal learning. My mentor, Gary Trujillo, shared his experience at HBS and in the 2+2 program, and it was a perfect option for me. The Latino Student Organization (LASO) was my home away from home. The annual LASO retreats stand out as some of my favorite HBS memories. Whether going on hikes, salsa dancing, or sharing a meal, our retreats were moments in which we came together to connect and build community. To this day, the friends fostered through LASO comprise my closest HBS friends. We enjoy cheering each other on as we progress professionally and being there to celebrate and support each other as we reach personal milestones. [...]
Jacqueline Burgos (MBA 2014) grew up in Brooklyn, New York and received a BBA from Pace University’s Pforzheimer Honors College with a concentration in Accounting and minors in Economics and Latin American Studies. During her time at HBS she interned at Univision and The Raine Group. She currently works at Google in their Go-to-Market organization supporting the largest media advertising agencies in the world.
