Boeing was a pioneer of commercial aviation. Boeing organized United Airlines outfitting it with 25 specially designed, heavy-duty planes. Boeing also designed and constructed a fleet of bi-planes, B-40s, to be used in the mail service. In its first year, Boeing carried 230,000 pounds of mail and 525 passengers. Boeing was awarded the Guggenheim medal in 1934 for his activities in the aircraft industry.
