Stemberg was a pioneer in the retail industry. By contracting directly with manufacturers of office supplies and eliminating the wholesaler, Stemberg was able to offer discounted supplies to small businesses and individuals through his non-descript retail centers. As he expanded his chain of Staples stores throughout the US, Stemberg added new services for small businesses including a copier center, a technology resource for managing computer networks, and office furniture. Staples became one of only six retail outlets to generate $3 billion in revenues in less than ten years.
