During the height of the sixties sexual revolution, Guccione provided the most significant challenge to the dominance of Playboy in the men’s leisure magazine sector. Opting for more explicit photographs and more highly charged journalistic content in Penthouse, Guccione scored a major victory in the late seventies and early eighties by eclipsing the circulation of Playboy. Guccione chose to primarily sell his magazines at newsstands which enabled his company to reap significant revenue during its heyday. In recent years, Penthouse has fallen victim to its own pioneering success – the broad availability of even more explicit content on the Internet.
