Mayer, known as the unchallenged “czar of Hollywood” for over a quarter of century, created one of the largest motion pictures companies in the world. After acquiring control over the largest chain of theatres in New England and creating his own distribution agency, Mayer went into the production side of the movie business by joining Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corporation, which controlled worldwide production, distribution and exhibition interests. He was also a founder and the first president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science.
