After a brief career in politics, which ended in disillusion, Patterson entered journalism full-time, first working at his family's newspaper, the Chicago Tribune, and then starting the New York Daily News on his own. The Daily News was Patterson's brainchild, and he helped it grow from a modest tabloid into a more respectable paper with the largest daily circulation in the U.S., and the largest Sunday circulation in the world.
