Goodnight created the initial SAS (statistical analysis system) application as part of his doctoral program. Though the software was initially used to analyze agricultural data, it was soon applied to a variety of business situations. Over the years, Goodnight has continued to develop the code for SAS products and has built the company into the largest privately owned software business in the country. SAS applications have become part of standard business processes in direct marketing, banking, and government analysis.
