Clark took American Express from a struggling travel service to one of the most recognized credit corporations in the world. When he took the CEO position, American Express was on the verge of selling its fledgling two-year old credit card business. Clark revived the business through the memorable advertising campaign “Do you know me?” and later, “Don’t leave home without it.” By the time Clark retired in 1977, the company had grown to include over 650 offices in more than 100 countries, with over 8 million cardholders.
