Sklenar’s knowledge of fiscal matters helped the company survive a slow down in the construction business and a rapidly changing chemicals marketplace. To cope with the change, Sklenar invested in research and development of new products, but also put money into strengthening its core areas, such as crushed stone for concrete, where Vulcan is the nation’s largest and most profitable producer. Coupled with this investment and expansion, Sklenar also instituted an array of cost cutting measures, all of which allowed the firm to continually report positive earnings throughout his tenure.
