Westinghouse helped to revolutionize the power industry with his electric company. A prolific inventor, Westinghouse figured out a way to adapt Europe’s alternating current technology to American needs, creating two-phase adapters that allowed people to use the new power system. The so-called “Battle of the Currents” ensued as Westinghouse fought with the larger, older Edison General Electric. Though the latter’s size ultimately forced the former into bankruptcy, Westinghouse’s contribution to the power industry remains one of the most important.
