After his idea for a magazine with condensed articles for time starved readers was rejected by several New York publishers, Wallace borrowed money from his family and launched Reader’s Digest from his basement apartment in 1921. Reader’s Digest was eventually published in over thirteen languages and had over 30 million subscribers. It was considered the most successful publishing venture in history.
