Great American Business Leaders of the 20th Century
Daniel Guggenheim
The American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) was a trust set up to give William Rockefeller control of all mineral resources in America. Refusing to sell out to Rockefeller, Guggenheim engaged in both price competition with ASARCO as well as a courtroom battle. Guggenheim emerged victorious and took control of ASARCO in 1900. Guggenheim bought copper mines and gold fields in Chile, tin mines in Bolivia, and a rubber plantation and diamond mines in the Congo and Angola. Guggenheim became the nation’s most successful miner.
