As a young purchasing department officer, Walgreen Jr. gained valuable management experience by overseeing a wide variety of the company’s buying operations and by creating several new lines of merchandise. During his tenure as Walgreens' president, he expanded the size of the stores and greatly increased sales volume, all while maintaining Walgreens' commitment to low prices.
