Realizing that most of the software industry’s products were not responsive to the demands of its customers, Wang founded CA in 1976 with the intent to change that. Though Wang has made numerous acquisitions since CA’s inception, he credits the company’s success to coordination between engineers and business managers to achieve sound products and a culture of management that fosters brutal honesty and integrity. CA earned revenues of over $5 billion and net income of $570 million in 1998, and had the distinction of supplying software products to 19 out of every 20 Fortune 500 firms.
