Conway grew Continental Can to become the second largest can manufacturing company in the world, second only to American Can Company. Conway did this by acquiring nine can manufacturing companies. Over time, he operated 30 can manufacturing plants throughout the United States, as well as a tin plate mill in Pennsylvania, and a research department in Chicago.
