Gaston first established Booker T. Washington Burial Insurance Company to offer health and life insurance to black families to help them secure eloquent and respectable funeral services. Upon that success, BTW continued to grow, adding financial arms Vulcan Realty and Investment Corporation and Citizen’s Federal Savings Bank, as well the Booker T. Washington Business College. Throughout Gaston’s half-century leadership, BTW and its subsidiaries enjoyed tremendous success, with assets of $34 million and insurance in force of $726 million by 1987.
