Creating a Safe and Enriching Campus Experience

Academic Spaces (more on the Hybrid Classroom below)

  • Students who anticipate difficulty completing their coursework from home may apply for dedicated space on campus to participate in virtual/hybrid classes.
  • Across the 1st year (RC) students will be assigned to small discussion groups or section groups. Each group of 6 students will be assigned a dedicated space where they may take virtual/hybrid classes together. These spaces are dispersed throughout Executive Education Living Groups, classrooms, and lounges. Zoom pods will be made available for 2nd year (EC) students based on their course sections.
  • All campus buildings are locked and require a Harvard University ID for entry.

Dining

  • Only 25 people are allowed in each outlet to get their meals at one time.
  • Dining seating capacity is limited to 1 or 2. Table occupancy is clearly marked, those for 2 diners include a plastic divider to ensure appropriate separation.
  • All dining associates and managers have been trained in the latest protocols for cleaning, protection, and food safety.
  • During meal service, all high-touch surfaces are cleaned and sanitized at least every hour, and each outlet receives thorough cleaning every night.
  • All food items and utensils have been prepackaged.
  • All campus food outlets have been outfitted with contactless payment systems.

Physical Distancing

  • Visible communication of community health values, expected behavior, and sanitizing protocols.
  • Clear and consistent signage to show available seating and aid orderly people flow
  • Furniture de-densified to support occupancy limits.
  • Where appropriate, plastic barriers have been put in place to enable contactless service

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Face coverings required at all times, except when actively eating. To support this policy, dining areas have been clearly designated.

Air Quality and Ventilation

  • Air handlers in all campus buildings have been upgraded to a minimum of MERV-13 filters to ensure they meet new CDC, State of Massachusetts, and American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards.
  • Ventilation rates on campus have been optimized to provide as much fresh air as possible while still maintaining thermal comfort of occupants.

Cleaning

  • HBS Custodial Services performs routine cleaning of high-touch surfaces (i.e., doorknobs, elevator buttons, handrails, chairs, dining tables, telephones, light switches, copiers/printers, toilet seats, etc.) throughout the day, as well as a sanitization process during the overnight hours.
  • Sanitizing wipes and touchless hand sanitizer dispensers are available throughout campus to enable self-sanitizing as needed.
Creating a Safe and Enriching Learning Experience

Physical Distancing

  • Only 25 students may be physically present per hybrid classroom (normal capacity 101), the balance of students will be remote. All are seated 6' plus apart.
  • Clear and consistent signage to show available seats and aid orderly entering/exiting
  • Unavailable chairs tethered in place prevent use and further define available seating.
  • Class start times and breaks have been staggered to reduce congestion in the hallways.

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Masks should conform to the nose and be tightly fitted and multi-layered. Masks are required at all times, except for briefly sipping water; eating in the classroom is not permitted. 3-ply masks are also provided in the classrooms.
  • Visible communication of community health values, expected behavior, and room sanitizing protocol

Air Quality and Ventilation

  • All air filters in the hybrid classroom have been upgraded to MERV 14 filters which exceed the new CDC, State of Massachusetts, and American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards.
  • Ventilation in the classrooms has been increased to achieve a minimun 2x the normal air flow without affecting the thermal comfort of occupants.
  • Most classrooms already benefit from air being supplied high and returned low, potentially reducing the movement of aerosols.

Cleaning

  • The hybrid classroom will be disinfected to CDC recommended standards each time occupancy changes.
  • For RC classrooms, the teaching zone high touch surfaces are disinfected between faculty, and the entire room is disinfected when classes conclude.
  • For EC classrooms, the high touch surfaces in the entire room are sanitized between classes.
  • Sanitizing wipes and touchless hand sanitizer dispensers are available to enable self-sanitizing as needed.
