Prompt-a-thon Invites HBS IT Staff to Sharpen GenAI Skills

HBS IT staff work on prompts in small teams using GenAI tools during a Prompt-a-thon

You may have heard of a Hackathon, but what about a Prompt-a-thon?

A Prompt-a-thon is an event where participants are given specific prompt challenges and use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools to create and refine prompts and solutions within a set time frame. HBS IT recently held a Prompt-a-thon hosted by the Business Relationship Management and Instructional Design and Training Services Teams.

The Prompt-a-thon encouraged participants to craft effective prompts to enhance interactions with GenAI and foster creativity and innovation. The event also provided an opportunity for collaboration and exploration of GenAI-powered solutions for real-world tasks.

About 20 HBS IT staff members gathered on Tuesday, Oct. 29, to test their prompting skills. Teams had 50 minutes to work on GenAI prompts and prepare a quick-fire presentation to share their outcomes with the rest of the group.

Whether designing a system using data analytics to predict alumni engagement or developing an AI assistant that generates riddles, participants used prompting best practices to guide their work.

  • Provide Instructions: Specify the task you want the tool to complete as well as your goal

  • Be Detailed: Provide context and feedback to the tool

  • Use Examples: Give the tool reference materials to clarify your response expectations

  • Iterate on Prompts: Learn about the tool’s strengths and weaknesses through trial and errors
