Improving Productivity in Health Care
Vinay Mascarenhas (MBA 2012)
“The most exciting thing about health care IT is the sector’s range of innovation, from improved electronic medical records to remote patient monitoring and telehealth.”
What made you decide to go into your sector of interest?
My career mission is to improve the productivity of the health care sector. A major driver of the sector's unproductivity is its antiquated IT infrastructure. If we want to lift sector productivity, we have to leverage IT. The most exciting thing about health care IT is the sector's range of innovation, from improved electronic medical records to remote patient monitoring and telehealth.
Why would you recommend HBS for someone who wants to work in the healt hcare industry?
The professors, the location, and the students. Many of the major trends in health care today were anticipated and shaped by HBS academics (Regina Herzlinger's research on consumer-driven health care is just one example). Boston is a global hub of health care, and HBS has deep relationships with the area's academic medical centers and venture capital networks. Finally, the health care tribe at HBS is highly active, tightly-knit and a great resource to tap for knowledge and career advice.
What benefits do you see in working in the health care industry that you could not get working in other industries?
First and foremost, health care is unique among major industries in its capacity to positively impact people's lives. Second, the industry is going through a period of momentous change and uncertainty, which will create opportunities for innovation. Finally, I am attracted to the deeply interdisciplinary nature of health care: success in the field will inevitably require mastery of biology, technology, and policy.
