Solving the Cost Crisis in Health Care is the focus of Professor Robert Kaplan’s research and Executive Education teaching. He focuses on two topics: measuring and managing organizational risk and, in a joint project with Michael Porter, measuring the cost of delivering health care and linking costs to outcomes.

Transforming Care Delivery through improving operations is the focus of Professor Robert Huckman’s research, MBA course curriculum, and Executive Education teaching. Huckman is the faculty chair of the HBS Health Care Initiative and chair of the MBA Required Curriculum.

Students develop the managerial skills required to identify and implement change, drawing upon a range of approaches for improving healthcare delivery, including the value-based health care framework, continuous improvement, organizational redesign, population health management, precision medicine, patient engagement, and payment reform. For each of these approaches, the course emphasizes the importance of identifying improvement targets, implementing relevant changes, and measuring their effects on performance.

This program addresses the complex challenge faced by health care leaders: being accountable for both medical and financial outcomes. With the focus on dramatically enhancing patient care, this intensive program helps professionals design, manage, and improve their organizations.
