One of the best aspects of Harvard Business School is its proximity to the country’s best hospitals, academic centers, and culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. The Health Care Initiative regularly connects with local organizations through our Harvard partner relationships and our robust alumni network to create rich learning experiences for our students. Recently, we sponsored a tour of the Boston Medical Center which is the largest safety-net hospital in New England with the busiest trauma and emergency services center. With many of our students interested in improving care delivery, this was a great opportunity for them to catch a glimpse of the front lines of health care in action as well witness some of the behind-the-scenes flow of hospital operations. Each year, the Business Alliance for Health Management (BAHM) launches a case competition at which student teams from each member school compete against one another. In 2018, students were asked to prepare a case study on a specific health care organization and its strategy for responding to the uncertainty of health reform under President Trump. Each team prepared a paper, poster, and PowerPoint presentation, the last of which was delivered on the day of the competition which was hosted at University of California Berkeley Haas School of Business. Some of the greatest health care innovations have taken decades to reach widespread adoption, adding to the ever-increasing cost of health care. This "scale-up" competition seeks to shorten the time frame for innovation dissemination. In the fall of 2016 four teams were selected as finalists.
