Professor Gibson's primary research interests encompass inclusive leadership, operational effectiveness, human capital development, leadership, leader development, leading change, and risk management especially during crisis. As part of his broader work to develop/refine a theory of operational strategy he also studies how organizations can leverage a systems thinking approach to enable diverse high performing teams.

Senior Lecturer of Business Administration
Hise Gibson is a Senior Lecturer in the Technology and Operations Management Unit at Harvard Business School. He currently teaches the required MBA courses Technology and Operations Management and FIELD Global Immersion (Shreveport, LA '22, São Paulo, Brazil '23, Bangkok, Thailand '24). Prof. Gibson also serves as faculty chair for HBS' Viatris Executive Education Program and teaches for a variety of other custom Executive Education programs at the School. His research focuses primarily on topics related to innovations in technology and operations management, human capital development, inclusive leadership, and leading organizations through crisis. Prof. Gibson holds an MS in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Masters in Operational Art and Science from the Air Command and Staff College, and a Doctorate of Business Administration in Technology and Operations Management from Harvard Business School.
Technology and Operations Management
Hise Gibson graduated from West Point, where he was a member of the Division-1A Army football team. Following graduation, he commissioned in the US Army as an Aviation Officer in the UH60 Blackhawk Helicopter. He served with distinction in various command and staff positions for over 25 years with his most recent operational assignment being Battalion Commander in the historic 82nd Airborne Division. During his military service, he received the Bronze Star Medal for exceptional leadership in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a UH-60 Blackhawk Commander in Iraq, he significantly contributed to the Medical Evacuation Support in Afghanistan and oversaw the development of an airbase for the country's helicopter training school. Among other military decorations, he received the Legion of Merit, Master Aviator badge, Parchutist badge, and the Air Assault badge. He earned the rank of Colonel before retiring in 2021.
Professor Gibson has an MS in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Masters in Operational Art and Science from the Air Command and Staff College, and a Doctorate in Business Administration in Technology and Operations Management from Harvard Business School. Until July of 2021, Colonel Gibson served as an Academy Professor in the Systems Engineering Department at the United States Military Academy. He also established and directed the Systems Decisions and Analysis Center, directed the department’s core engineering sequence and engaged in strategic outreach as a Fellow at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
