Derrick studies environments that spur collaboration and creative thinking. In current projects, he examines the conditions that promote and constrain risk-taking and experimentation, especially in pursuit of novel solutions to complex, non-routine problems. Broadly, his research interests lie in how individuals, groups, and organizations collaborate to break ground in new territory when the stakes are high. His work spans multiple settings, including concert touring and live event production, health care delivery, and pharmaceutical research and development. Before enrolling at Harvard, Derrick earned an MBA from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and a BS in Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He brings eight years of consulting experience to the doctoral program.
