Derrick studies how people learn, lead and collaborate when faced with uncertain, complex work. Currently, his research explores the social properties of groups and teams and the role of the material environment in shaping individual and collective cognition. Broadly, his interests lie in how context shapes our attitudes and behavior at work. Before enrolling at HBS, Derrick earned an MBA from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and a BS in Engineering (Industrial Engineering) from the University of Pittsburgh. He brings more than eight years of operations and management consulting experience to the doctoral program.

- Research Summary

I study how we learn to work together and achieve shared goals in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous work environments. My research explores the social properties of groups and teams and individual and collective cognition. I am especially interested in aesthetic dimensions of organizing, like the role of the built environment (i.e., the human-made spaces where we live and work) in shaping individual and collective attitudes and behaviors.
