Derrick studies how people learn to lead and collaborate in the course of uncertain and complex work. Currently, his research explores emergent social properties of groups and teams engaged in dynamic, knowledge-intensive work and the role of the material environment in shaping individual and collective behaviors. Before enrolling at HBS, Derrick earned an MBA from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and a BS in Engineering (Industrial Engineering) from the University of Pittsburgh. He brings more than eight years of operations and management consulting experience to the doctoral program.

- Research Summary

I study how we learn to work together and achieve shared goals in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous work environments. My research explores emergent social properties of groups and teams engaged in dynamic, knowledge-intensive work. I am especially interested in aesthetic dimensions of organizing, like the role of the built environment (i.e., the human-made spaces where we live and work) in shaping individual and collective behaviors.
