Derrick studies how we learn, lead, and collaborate to execute complex, non-routine work. Currently, his research explores interpersonal and intergroup dynamics and the role of the physical environment in shaping how we think and feel about teamwork. Broadly, his interests lie in ways of organizing that enhance collaboration in the pursuit of creativity and innovation. He particularly enjoys studying work under uncertain, volatile, and ambigous circumstances. Before enrolling at Harvard, Derrick earned an MBA from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and a BS in Engineering (Industrial Engineering) from the University of Pittsburgh. He brings eight years of operations and management consulting experience to the doctoral program.

I study how we learn and work together and achieve shared goals in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous work environments. My research explores interpersonal dynamics in teams and the role of context in shaping our relationships at work. I am especially interested in aesthetic dimensions of organizing, like the role of the built environment (i.e., the human-made spaces where we live and work) in shaping in how we think and feel about collaboration.
