What's Heiring Next? The Saga of the Murdoch Media Empire
By: Lauren Cohen, Mayra Gazel and Sophia Pan
Abstract
As Lachlan Murdoch left the courthouse, he puzzled on the next phase of his battle for control over his father Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. With Rupert aging and his siblings determined to retain their voting rights, Lachlan was convinced that the future of News Corporation and Fox Corporation depended on his leadership. His father had backed him, amending the family trust to ensure power would ultimately fall into his hands. However, the “Objecting Children”—Prudence, Elizabeth, and James—viewed this move as a betrayal. They argued that it violated the original terms of the trust and stripped them of the control they believed they deserved. Would this power struggle fracture the Murdoch family beyond repair? Was Rupert’s endorsement of Lachlan cementing him as the “favorite child” at the expense of his siblings? Or was he simply making the right call—ensuring that a single, decisive leader should take charge of the colossal empire?
