RedBird Capital Partners
By: Anita Elberse and David Moreno Vicente
Abstract
In July 2024, Gerry Cardinale, the founder and managing partner of RedBird Capital Partners (‘RedBird’) has helped orchestrate a high-profile deal in the world of entertainment: one in which Skydance Media (‘Skydance’), a content production studio led by David Ellison and backed by RedBird, acquires Paramount Global, one of Hollywood’s major media conglomerates. RedBird will invest $1.8 billion of the more than $8 billion involved in the deal, making it the biggest bet to date for RedBird, a private investment firm that Cardinale founded in 2014 and that now has $10 billion in assets under management in the sports, media and entertainment, and financial services sectors. Is Cardinale’s big move into Hollywood the right one, and how can RedBird make the most of its investments in Skydance and now Paramount?
