By: William C. Kirby, Daniel Fu and Matthew Ngai
Abstract
This background note explains and documents the rise of China's EV industry. Moreover, it identifies the challenges facing it and posits several questions about the decisions needed to be made to sustain the industry's global dominance. Would Chinese producers be able to stay at the forefront of the EV technology race in the context of battery advancements made by other countries such as the U.S. and Japan?China’s OEMs faced substantial competition both locally and abroad. How would the domestic price war play out, and at what expense? As the EU decided to raise tariffs on Chinese EVs, what future did Chinese EV companies have on the continent, and what did this mean for Chinese EV manufacturers seeking to go global?
