Mercado Libre: The Best Is Yet to Come
By: Krishna G. Palepu, Fernando Fragueiro, Carla Larangeira and Mariana Cal
Abstract
In 2024, Marcos Galperín, CEO and co-founder of Mercado Libre, reflected on its 25-year rise as Latin America’s largest marketplace, fintech leader, and most valuable public company. With operations spanning 18 countries and a robust ecosystem combining e-commerce, logistics, financial services, and advertising, Mercado Libre had become a transformative force in a region fraught with economic and infrastructural challenges. However, recent developments—including heightened competition from global giants like Amazon and rising Asian players, enlarged workforce and increased complexity in its fintech business—cast uncertainty on its future. Could Mercado Libre sustain its growth trajectory in the face of fierce competition? How should it balance its investments in logistics and financial services with profitability pressures? And as the company scaled rapidly, would it be able to preserve the entrepreneurial culture that fueled its success? These questions loomed large as Galperín and his leadership team contemplated the next phase of Mercado Libre’s evolution.
