Reimagining the Employee Experience at the LEGO Group
By: Amy Edmondson, Mark Mortensen and Elisabeth Powell
Abstract
In 2024, the LEGO Group faced a decision about the future of LEGO’s Benefits Experience Strategy and the “Best of Both” remote/hybrid work policy. With over 28,500 employees spanning global hubs, retail stores, and manufacturing plants, LEGO leaders had to consider work design, employee experience, and adherence to its core cultural values. The hybrid work policy faced compliance challenges, and a family-focused benefits strategy risked alienating some employees. Kent Frederiksen, Vice President of Rewards at LEGO faced tough questions: How could LEGO maintain its culture while addressing these challenges? What strategies would preserve alignment with its values while meeting employee needs? The case examines the tensions between employee experience, culture, and leadership, and offers insights into the practicalities of people management in a world where work and even play have become significantly more complex.
