AI21 Labs in 2023: Strategy for Generative AI

Abstract
Teaching Note for HBS Case 724-383. The case has 3 important teaching purposes: First, what are the advantages and disadvantages of imitation? (e.g., Should AI21 imitate OpenAI with a chatbot?) Second, what are the advantages and disadvantages of keeping new technology proprietary? (e.g., Should AI21 deliver an open-source version of its model, like Meta?) And third, how should a start-up decide on the scope of the business (e.g., should it remain focused on B2C, move aggressively to B2B, or do both?)
