If You're Feeling Unappreciated, Give Someone Else Credit
By: Josh Baron and Rob Lachenauer
Abstract
Conflict in a family business can escalate quickly, but it's crucial to avoid it whenever possible. The article emphasizes recognizing the signs of escalating conflict and taking steps to prevent it. When disagreements arise, people often resort to legal action, which can trigger a destructive spiral of conflict. The authors advise taking a deep breath and attempting to communicate effectively before escalating the situation. There are seven stages of conflict, and individuals have a choice at each stage. It's essential to understand the consequences of litigation and the impact on both the family and the business. To prevent conflict, it's recommended to proactively address potential issues and create "shock absorbers" during stable times, preparing for disruptions that may occur in the future. Conflict, when managed properly, can actually strengthen a family business rather than tearing it apart.
