Working With Your In-Laws Isn't Always a Terrible Idea
By: Josh Baron and Rob Lachenauer
Abstract
This article delves into the complex dynamics involving in-laws within family-owned enterprises. In-laws often face a challenging dual role as they must conform to the same professional standards as non-family employees while concurrently grappling with perceptions of privilege associated with their familial ties. The article identifies key strategies for in-law success, which encompass gaining external work experience to bolster competence, reputation, and self-confidence. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of delineating personal and professional boundaries, advocating for transparency and professionalism in negotiations, understanding organizational structures, maintaining physical distance from the family center for growth and maturity, practicing patience, cultivating a network of support outside the family, and considering exit options as a last resort. These strategies, gleaned from successful in-laws, underscore the nuanced dynamics within family businesses and offer valuable insights into navigating these intricate landscapes.
