Performance Management at Afreximbank (B)
By: Robert S. Kaplan, Siko Sikochi, Anna Ngarachu and Namrata Arora
Abstract
Supplements the (A) case. Founded in October 1993, the Cairo-based African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) was a specialized continental financial institution designed to address the low level of intra-African trade, the decline in financial flows to Africa, the worsening external debt situation of many African countries, and the sharp reduction in lending to Africa by international commercial banks. The (A) case explores how the Bank introduced the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) to improve its performance management system. The goal was to transform the Bank’s bureaucratic culture and processes into an entrepreneurial one, more attuned to the fast-paced and dramatic changes happening in Africa. The (A) case was set in October 2019. A few months later, in March 2020, the world went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This (B) case explores how the Bank navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides an update on the Bank’s performance and initiatives to mobilize capital in Africa, and tracks how the Bank used the Balanced Scorecard in the face of an unexpected major crisis.
