Podimetrics: Next Steps for Diabetes Cases
By: Regina E. Herzlinger and Ben Creo
Abstract
Podimetrics, a virtual care management company treating adults with acute diabetes, sat at the intersection of medical device technology, digital health, and health services. Its SmartMat had demonstrated that it could help prevent amputations and that people with diabetes and providers would use it. SmartMat had also earned FDA clearance. Their leadership team considered the best next step for the company to take—would it be expanding the care model to include patients with less acute diabetes, focusing on their existing patients with diabetes, or re-designing their proprietary SmartMat to offer a lower-priced model, direct-to-consumer? With their goal to decrease the need for diabetes-related limb amputations, the leadership team at Podimetrics evaluated their best options.
This case is suitable both as a general business case for undergraduate and MBA students of any level focused on strategy, entrepreneurship, the healthcare industry, social entrepreneurship, chronic disease management, digital health, and diabetes.
