Abstract

How should managers determine and deliver on their responsibilities to society? This note summarizes prevailing approaches to this question and outlines an approach centered on what distinguishes society from other key constituencies, such as investors or customers. What distinguishes society, on this approach, is that business is not separate from, but part of, this key constituency. The note outlines three ways that managers can conceive of the responsibilities of business as part of society and asks managers to consider what kind of a society they want to live in.
