Slice Labs: Creating a Fraud-free Online Insurance Platform
By: Amit Goldenberg, Max Bazerman and Ruth Page
Abstract
"Slice Labs: Creating a Fraud-Free Online Insurance Platform" engages students with the challenge of how to influence other parties to not engage in fraud in the context of digital insurance. The case is centered around Slice, a digital insurance company that was established initially by providing insurance to the on-demand industry (i.e., to hosts who rented out their homes on platforms like Airbnb). When starting Slice, its co-founders Tim Attia and Stuart Baserman made a decision to build a platform that would be specifically designed to promote a sense of honesty. This task was especially challenging given the general negative sentiment and lack of trust that insurance clients have toward the industry. The students face the same challenge that the co-founders faced: how to design a system that promotes honesty and reduces the chance of fraud? While most students may be inclined to approach the idea of mitigating fraud in digital insurance by focusing on detection, using AI or sophisticated systems, the goal in this case study is to shift students’ attention towards the idea of fraud prevention using behavioral science. The realization that prevention is as important as detection is communicated near to the end of class, after students present their solutions to mitigating fraud on the Slice platform.
